Shearlocks

Shearlocks work differently to conventional maglocks with the holding strength coming from two steel pins locating into corresponding holes on the spring loaded armature plate. Magnetic force is used to engage with the armature plate when the door is closed.

Similar to Mortice Maglocks, shearlocks utilise an electromagnetic force to create a strong bond between the lock and the strike plate, effectively keeping the door securely locked.

The name “shearlock” comes from the mechanical principle on which it operates. These locks feature a unique design where the electromagnet and armature plate are mounted on the door frame and the door, respectively. When the shearlock is engaged, the electromagnet generates a magnetic field that attracts and securely holds the armature plate. This creates a shear force along the locking mechanism, ensuring that the door remains locked until the magnetic force is released.

Shearlocks are particularly suitable for situations where a high level of holding force is required, as they can provide significant shear strength. They are commonly used in applications where there is a need for enhanced security, such as in commercial buildings, government facilities, and sensitive areas.

One of the key advantages of shearlocks is their ability to withstand high levels of physical force or attempted forced entry.
